The first morning I understood what I had done, I was standing at the water's edge on Saadiyat Beach at 6:40 AM with a coffee going cold in my hand, watching a line of small footprints emerge from the dune grass and vanish at the tide line. Turtle tracks. A hawksbill had come up in the night to lay, and the beach patrol had already roped off the nest with a little orange flag.
There was nobody else on the sand for half a mile in either direction. I had a key in my pocket to an apartment three streets back, a fridge with yesterday's dates and labneh, and no checkout date. That was the point of the whole thing.
